The government has placed special emphasis on the use of solar panels to tackle the country’s ongoing energy crisis and expand environmentally friendly power. As part of this push, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken the initiative to install solar panels at his own residence in Gulshan. Installation work began on Thursday (September 17) morning. It is learned that he has taken up this initiative privately, not through government funding.
The prime minister has announced several important steps and directives to increase the use of renewable energy and encourage rooftop solar power generation. These include the phased installation of solar panels at all important government buildings, the opportunity to sell surplus electricity, duty waivers and exemptions on equipment imports, and an initiative to install solar panels at various educational institutions, including those under the National University, to avoid load-shedding and keep multimedia classrooms running without interruption. The government has also set a target, under its broader plan, of meeting 20 percent of the country’s total electricity demand from renewable energy by 2030.
