Jahangirnagar University’s administration has fined 20 students from its physics and history departments a total of 615,000 taka over two separate incidents of ragging, or hazing. The students will remain barred from their ongoing exams, term-final exams and any subsequent scheduled exams until the fines are paid.
The decision was announced in two separate office orders signed by acting registrar Dr A B M Azizur Rahman on Wednesday afternoon. The punishment follows a decision taken at a special syndicate meeting held on September 13.
According to the office order, from 10pm to 3am on July 20, several students from the physics department’s 2024-25 academic year (54th batch) ragged several students from the same department’s 2025-26 academic year (55th batch). The incident took place on the west side of Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq Hall (Manpura), with allegations of inhumane abuse, obscene language and forcing the victims to do ear-holding squats. Eight students from the department were fined a total of 365,000 taka: Md Zahid Hasan, Md Fazle Hasan Fahad and Syed Sakib Ahmed Ratul were each fined 50,000 taka; Md Mahmudul Amin Siyam, Md Mostafizur Rahman Mizu and Md Foysal Ahmed were each fined 45,000 taka; Md Mahmudul Hasan Khan Akib was fined 40,000 taka; and Md Al-Amin Hossain was fined 35,000 taka.
Separately, from 11pm to 2am on July 3, several students from the history department’s 2024-25 academic year (54th batch) were accused of ragging 13 students from the same department’s 2025-26 academic year (55th batch). The office order says the incident took place on the university school and college ground, involving obscene language, forced ear-holding, and hazing carried out under the guise of “teaching manners.” Twelve students from the history department were fined a total of 250,000 taka over the incident. Md Abu Abtahi Anik was fined 30,000 taka, while the remaining 11 — Nasim Uddin Mojumder, Md Mahfuzur Rahman Anto, Abdullah Mahdi, Shuvashish Roy Pranto, Md Rayhan Khan, Md Naimul Hasan, Md Isfaq Hadi, Naeem Ahmed Sajib, Kartik Chandra Roy, Kazi Shah Jamshed Alam Nabil and Saifullah Mansur Anan — were each fined 20,000 taka.
The office order said the fines were imposed under section 3(2)(d) of the Jahangirnagar University Students’ Discipline Ordinance, 2018. It also warned that the students would face harsher punishment if similar offences are repeated in future.
