A child named Arisha Khatun, 2, has drowned in a pond in Karamdi village, Gangni upazila, Meherpur.
The incident occurred around 1:30pm on Sunday (September 13).
Arisha Khatun was the daughter of Rakibul Islam of Karamdi Mathpara village in Tentulbaria union.
Locals said Arisha accidentally fell into a pond belonging to Shafiqul Islam while playing near her home. She was rescued by local people and taken to Gangni Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared her dead.
Dr Mahbubur Rahman Noyon, medical officer at Gangni Upazila Health Complex, said the child had died before reaching the hospital.
Muhaddid Morshed Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Gangni police station, said police were sent to the scene after being informed, and that preparations were under way to file an unnatural death case over the incident.
