Wasted chances one after another, three shots off the woodwork and a missed penalty in the closing moments — it all added up to a frustrating night for Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho’s side suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 1-0 to Real Betis in a match defined by Kylian Mbappe’s failure from the penalty spot.
Friday’s match at Sevilla’s La Cartuja Stadium remained goalless until the 80th minute. Hosts Betis then went ahead through a goal from Troy Parrot. Real were handed a golden chance to equalize in the closing moments but failed to take it.
Madrid were on the attack from the start of the match. In the 14th minute, a shot from Vinicius Junior struck the post. Late in the first half, Mbappe also had a great chance to score but failed to find the net despite two attempts.
Before the break, Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles denied a header from Jude Bellingham. Later, a header from Dean Huijsen struck the crossbar and came back into play.
Real continued to search for a goal in the second half without success. Finally, in the 81st minute, Betis’s Troy Parrot scored on a rebound from a corner. Real did find the net afterward, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
In stoppage time, Real were awarded a penalty after Vinicius was fouled. Mbappe stepped up to take it, but goalkeeper Alvaro Valles read the direction of his spot kick in advance. Diving to his left, he saved the weak shot.
Mbappe had scored four goals in Real’s first two La Liga matches this season. But against Betis, the French star wasted three good chances and also missed from the penalty spot.
After their first defeat in four matches, Real Madrid have dropped to second in the table with 9 points. Betis sit third on equal points, while Barcelona top the table with 9 points from one match fewer.
