A paternal aunt and her nephew were killed when a bus rear-ended their motorcycle in Abhaynagar upazila, Jashore. The accident occurred around 11:15 a.m. Friday in the Chengutia area on the Jashore-Khulna highway, in front of Majumder Agro Food Industries.
The deceased were identified as Amjad Gazi, 65, son of Hakim Gazi of Lakshmipur village in the upazila, and Asiron Bibi, 65, wife of Malek Sardar of the same village. The two were paternal aunt and nephew.
According to highway police and eyewitnesses, Amjad Gazi was riding his motorcycle Friday morning with his aunt, Asiron Bibi, returning to their home in Lakshmipur village from the Basundia area of Jashore Sadar upazila. Around 11:15 a.m., they reached the Chengutia area in front of Majumder Agro Food Industries, where several trucks were parked in a row on both sides of the highway.
As the motorcycle passed through the line of trucks, a Gorai Paribahan passenger bus traveling from Kushtia to Khulna struck it from behind. Amjad Gazi and Asiron Bibi were thrown from the motorcycle onto the highway and critically injured.
Local residents rescued them and took them to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex, where emergency-department doctors declared both dead.
Dr. Md. Ferdous Shanto, the attending physician at Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex, said the two accident victims were brought to the hospital, but one died before arrival and the other died shortly after.
Nowapara Highway Police Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam said the two motorcycle riders were killed when a speeding Gorai Paribahan bus struck them. The bus has been seized, but the driver and his assistant fled. Legal action is underway.
