Social media platform WhatsApp has introduced new security measures to keep user accounts more secure. Along with the existing six-digit two-step verification PIN, the new feature adds the option to use a stronger password, allowing a more complex combination of letters, numbers and special characters.
The new system encourages users to set strong, unique passwords instead of easily guessable ones such as names or birth dates or other personal information. This can reduce the risk of unauthorized access to an account.
Multiple passkeys on one account
WhatsApp allows the use of multiple passkeys to secure a single account. These include biometric and device-based authentication methods such as a phone’s fingerprint sensor, Face ID, or screen-lock system.
To find the passkey option, go to WhatsApp’s Settings › Account › Passkeys.
More information to identify unknown numbers
Android users now also have the option to see more information about calls from unknown numbers. Even if a number isn’t saved in a user’s contacts, if it is linked to WhatsApp, information about the associated person can help users decide more easily whether it’s safe to answer the call.
Security features alone aren’t enough — stay vigilant
Turning on new security features doesn’t make an account completely risk-free. Scammers and hackers can try various tactics to steal user information. Clicking a suspicious or tempting link, in particular, can put an account’s security at risk.
For this reason, it’s important to regularly check WhatsApp’s Linked Devices list. Any unfamiliar device found there should be removed immediately. Users should also be cautious when scanning a QR code or approving a login on a new device.
