The Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), founded by student leaders who spearheaded the July 2024 mass uprising, is planning to hold its first council around its second anniversary in February 2027, senior party leaders said.

The NCP formally launched on February 28, 2025, after the Awami League government fell on August 5, 2024. Within a year, it secured Election Commission registration, contested the first national election in coalition, and won six seats plus two reserved women’s seats — giving it 8 of 350 parliamentary seats.

The party’s highest decision-making body is the Political Council (PC), currently comprising 18 members. These include Convenor Md. Nahid Islam, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Chief Organizers Sarjis Alam (north) and Hasnat Abdullah (south), Spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Chief Coordinator Naseeruddin Patwari, Senior Joint Convenors Samanta Sharmin and Arifuzzaman Adeeb, Senior Joint Member Secretary Nahida Sarwar Niva, and Senior Joint Chief Coordinator Abdul Hannan Masood. Eight more leaders were subsequently added, including MP Dr. Atiq Mujahid and six others announced on June 11.

Ahead of the council, the party is restructuring its central framework. The current 11 key positions may be reduced to six: convenor, member secretary, two senior joint convenors, and two senior joint member secretaries. The chief organizer position is being eliminated, Joint Convenor Sarwar Tushar said.

Central Joint Member Secretary Zaynal Abedin Shishir said a draft constitution has been prepared and is expected to be ratified at the first council. Party leaders said the council date has not been finalized but could coincide with the NCP’s second anniversary on February 28, 2027.
