Three members of the same family drowned in a pond in Lakshmipur.
The accident occurred Sunday (Sept. 6) afternoon at the Ibrahim Patwari house in the Kacharibagh area, Ward No. 6 of Sadar upazila’s Shakchar union.
The deceased are Abu Siddique, 70, of the same house, and his two grandchildren — Piyas, 7, the young son of his son Abdul Aziz, and Poppy Akter, 8, the young daughter of his daughter Sumi Akter.
Locals said the elderly Abu Siddique had taken his two grandchildren to bathe in the pond in front of the house. He dove into the water but did not resurface. When Piyas and Poppy went looking for him underwater, they also drowned. Locals spotted the three floating in the pond about an hour after the incident and recovered them.
Relatives believe Abu Siddique suffered a stroke while diving underwater and died, and that the grandchildren drowned while searching for him.
Wahid Parvez, officer-in-charge of Lakshmipur Sadar Model police station, said, “I have heard about the incident. It is very tragic. Police have been sent to the scene. We will speak with the family and take the necessary legal steps regarding this incident.”
