Rizq, or provision, is one of the greatest blessings given by Allah. We usually think of rizq as just food and wealth, but that is not right: rizq covers everything we need for life, and it is ordained by Allah. The Quran says: “There is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision, and He knows its dwelling place and its resting place. All is in a clear record.” (Surah Hud, 11:6) In another verse Allah reassures us: “And in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised.” (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:22)
We often think that if we had not done a certain thing, or relied on a certain person, or if a certain person were not in our life, we could not have managed, could not have lived well, eaten well or dressed well. This is nothing but a mistaken belief.
We sink into despair and break down over small things, which is nothing but the whispering of Satan. Even after effort, people’s provision sometimes rises and falls; this is simply a test from Allah. Our Lord tells us: “We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:155)
In worldly life, people worry a great deal about their provision depending on their circumstances. But Allah has reassured us not to worry: “And He will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him.” (Surah At-Talaq, 65:3)
Our provision will reach us at the right time, in the right place and from the right source, as Allah commands. What greater blessing could there be than Allah Himself taking responsibility for our provision? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Allah wrote down the decrees of all creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, when His Throne was upon the water.” (Muslim, 2653)
Imam al-Shafi’i said: “What is written for you will be yours even if it is on top of a mountain, and what is not written for you will not be yours even if it is between your lips.” So there is no need to worry about provision.
Let us not worry about our provision, and trust at every step of life in our Lord, the Provider. May Allah grant us that ability. Amen.
