Marriage is not a man-made contract but a sacred law from Almighty Allah and the foundation of the family. Allah has ordained marriage for the preservation of humanity and as the lawful way for men and women to meet their natural needs. Married life brings order, peace and contentment of the soul. Allah says: “And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, so that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy.” (Surah Ar-Rum, 30:21)
Marriage is the sunnah of the prophets. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Marriage is my sunnah. Whoever does not act according to my sunnah is not of me. Marry, for I will take pride in the size of my ummah on the Day of Judgement.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, 1846)
The Prophet encouraged those able to marry to do so at the right time. Marriage helps people lower their gaze and protect their chastity, easing the path to Paradise. The Messenger of Allah said: “O young people, whoever among you is able to marry should marry, for it helps lower the gaze and guard chastity.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5066)
It is best to marry once one is able. Many people are curious about marriage, and some ask whether Allah has already decided whom each person will marry, or whether this can change through one’s actions.
The companion Abdullah ibn Amr said: “Allah wrote down the destiny of every person 50,000 years before He created the heavens and the earth, and whatever He has written for someone will happen.” (Mishkat al-Masabih, 79, citing Sahih Muslim)
Another hadith says that when the companions once asked the Prophet whether they should rely only on destiny and give up deeds, he said: “Keep doing good deeds, for each person will find easy the deeds for which he was created. For those among the fortunate, the deeds of the fortunate are made easy, and for those among the unfortunate, the deeds of the unfortunate are made easy.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 4949)
Islamic scholars say that marriage, like birth and death, is predetermined and written in one’s qadr (destiny), and a person will marry whoever is written for them. But what is written in destiny can also change through prayer. However hard one tries, one cannot marry someone unless it is written or Allah wills it; everything rests with Allah, and what He wills will happen.
If someone wishes to marry a particular person, they should pray to Allah alongside making lawful efforts, since prayer can change destiny. The Messenger of Allah said: “Nothing changes destiny except prayer.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2139)
Answering a question on YouTube, Shaykh Ahmadullah, chairman of the As-Sunnah Foundation, said: “Allah has determined who will marry whom. The hadith of the Messenger of Allah also give clear guidance on this.”
