A protest march and human chain were held in Narail on Thursday after a 32-year-old man with mental and hearing disabilities died following overnight torture by a group who suspected him of theft.

The victim, a registered government disability allowance recipient, was seized on June 24 by residents of Gobra Malopara in Narail Sadar, tied to a tree, and beaten through the night. He sustained cigarette burns and was dragged along a paved road, according to the FIR filed by his elder brother. The attackers also attempted to strangle him with a towel and struck him with an iron rod, causing severe injuries, the FIR stated.

Police recovered the victim the following morning and admitted him to Narail District Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital on Monday, where he died on Thursday morning.

His elder brother filed a murder case at Narail Sadar police station on June 29, naming five accused — Prosenjit Biswas, Sourav Biswas, Apurbo Biswas, Akash Biswas, and Hriday Biswas — along with several unidentified individuals. All named accused have been absconding since the incident, police said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Rokibul Hasan said police are working to arrest the accused. “Full police cooperation will be provided to ensure justice. Officers have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order,” he said.

One of the accused’s mother claimed her son had taken the victim to the hospital, and denied knowledge of who beat him. Community members have demanded swift arrest and trial under speedy justice provisions.
