Police in India’s Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, have arrested a 23-year-old man on charges of throwing a petrol bomb outside his girlfriend’s house. The incident occurred early Friday (Sept. 4) morning and was captured entirely on CCTV.
The arrested man, identified as Nagarjun, works transporting goods. Police said he was drunk at the time of the incident, and allegedly carried out the attack out of anger after his girlfriend had not spoken to him for about a week.
Police said Nagarjun and the young woman had been in a relationship for about six years. She had recently stopped speaking to him, and angered by this, he went to her house early Friday morning and threw a petrol bomb.
A police officer said: “Nagarjun was intoxicated. He was angry that his girlfriend of six years had not spoken to him for the past week. The process of sending him into judicial custody is underway.”
CCTV footage shows Nagarjun setting an object on fire and throwing it. The object exploded but missed its target, landing on his own body instead. He then quickly fled the scene.
CCTV footage also shows another person sleeping outside a nearby shop at the time of the incident.
Police have arrested and are questioning Nagarjun. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
The incident occurred a day after a heated debate in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly over crime, law and order, and women’s safety. The issues were discussed Thursday as Chief Minister Vijay spoke while seeking budget allocations for his department.
Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin alleged a rise in murders, sexual offenses, custodial deaths and honor killings in the state. He claimed that in 116 days under the government, there had been 200 murders, 10 honor killings and eight custodial deaths, citing figures given to a television channel.
Meanwhile, PWD Minister Adhav Arjuna alleged a lack of transparency in crime data under the previous DMK government.
Amid the debate, Chief Minister Vijay said he would answer all the opposition’s questions on Monday.
