An allegation has surfaced that 35 mahogany trees were cut down on government land in the Dighalia area of Bhadrabila union in Narail Sadar upazila. Saif Uddin Molla, son of Billa Molla of Bogura village, had been cutting the valuable trees for three days and trying to sell them. On receiving the news, the administration seized the trees.
Shamim Molla of Dighalia village and others said Saif Uddin felled the 35 mahogany trees from 16 decimals of government land over three days from Friday to Sunday and tried to sell them; the trees are worth about 350,000 taka. After the administration was informed, the trees were seized — though villagers allege the accused had already removed some of them. Saif Uddin has gone into hiding since the incident.
Narail Sadar assistant commissioner (land) K H Tasfiqur Rahman said: “On receiving news of tree-cutting on government land, I sent the union nayeb to the scene. The trees have been seized. Legal action is being taken.”
