Bangladesh among 77 countries shunning Netanyahu at the UN

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the UN General Assembly was met with an unprecedented boycott and walkout. The seats of 77 countries, including Bangladesh, were empty during his 41-minute address, according to Israel’s own review.

According to Israeli officials, delegates from various countries left the hall in protest as soon as Netanyahu took the podium, while many other delegations boycotted the session from the start and were absent from their seats.

The list includes Israel’s four neighbours, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, as well as influential countries such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Israeli officials said, however, that not every absence was a walkout, since it was a morning session and some delegations did not arrive on time. Egypt and Jordan, for example, did not take part directly in the planned walkout but their seats were empty. Pakistan’s delegation, meanwhile, left the chamber and listened to the speech standing in the lobby.

Delegates from Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, partners in the Abraham Accords, stayed in their seats and listened despite strong reactions to the Gaza war. International media gave more attention to the empty chamber than to Netanyahu’s speech, and analysts say the episode highlighted Israel’s deep diplomatic isolation.
