Two brothers have drowned in a pond in the Bhatia area of Narail municipality. The tragedy occurred at about 10:30am on Wednesday (10 June). The children were Omar Faruk, 2, and his elder brother Abu Bakkar, 5, sons of day-labourer Majedul Sheikh of Bhatia village. They drowned in the pond beside their home while playing.
According to family sources, their mother was asleep in the house at the time; waking to find the children gone, she began searching around the home and at one point found them in the pond beside the house. They were taken to hospital, where Narail District Hospital physician Alok Kumar Bakshi said both children had died before arrival. The deaths have cast a pall of grief over the family, relatives and neighbours.
