Fingerlings have been released into local waters to boost native fish production. Rui, katla and mrigel fingerlings were released into several water bodies in Gurudaspur, Natore, on Tuesday afternoon. Local MP Abdul Aziz released the fingerlings.
According to the fisheries office, a total of 285 kilograms of fingerlings were released across nine water bodies in the upazila under the 2026-27 fiscal year’s revenue budget. This included 55 kilograms in Bilsha Bil in Chalanbeel, 50 kilograms in the pond of Khamarpathuria Madrasa, 30 kilograms in the upazila parishad pond, 30 kilograms in Dikdaria Bil, 30 kilograms in Mirza Mahmud canal, 30 kilograms in Kholagari Bil, 20 kilograms in the dead Tulshi river at Patpara, 20 kilograms in the thana pond, and 20 kilograms in the dead river at Bil Kathor.
Those involved hope this initiative to release fingerlings into open water bodies will boost native fish production on one hand while increasing fish availability in these waters on the other, with a positive impact on the livelihoods of local fishermen and the general public’s fish supply.
Local MP Md Abdul Aziz was chief guest at the fingerling release event at the upazila parishad pond. The event, chaired by upazila executive officer Fahmida Afroz, was attended by Natore district fisheries officer Md Omar Ali, upazila senior fisheries officer Ratan Chandra Saha, upazila agriculture officer K M Rafiul Islam, project implementation officer (PIO) Aminur Rashid, upazila BADC assistant engineer Saidur Rahman, and other relevant officials. Fishermen from various areas also attended.
Those involved said releasing native fish species into open water bodies would boost fish production while playing an important role in conserving fisheries resources and protecting aquatic biodiversity. If the released fingerlings are properly protected, they said, these waters will see even greater abundance of native fish in the future.
