اَللّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ
Transliteration: Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan.
Meaning: O Allah, I truly seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief.
Hamm (الْهَمِّ): The anxiety or worry that arises over the future.
Hazan (الْحَزَنِ): The sorrow, grief or depression that forms over the past.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite this dua when troubled by anxious thoughts. (Bukhari, Hadith: 2893)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) once delivered a sermon in which he said: Beware of miserliness, for those before you were destroyed by it. Greed commanded them to be miserly, and they were miserly. It commanded them to sever family ties, and they did so. And it incited them toward sin, and they fell into it.
