The greatest success in a believer’s life is attaining Allah’s pleasure and being saved from Hellfire. For this reason, a believer strives each day to perform deeds that bring them closer to Allah’s mercy and salvation.
Hazrat Muslim ibn al-Harith al-Tamimi (RA) narrated from his father, Harith ibn Muslim al-Tamimi (RA), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told him privately: “When you finish the Maghrib prayer, recite this dua seven times. If you die that night after saying it, protection from Hellfire will be recorded for you. And when you finish the Fajr prayer, say it again in the same way. If you die that day, protection from Hellfire will be recorded for you.”
The dua is:
Allahumma ajirni minan-nar.
Meaning: “O Allah, protect me from the Fire.”
(Abu Dawud, Hadith 5079; Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 18054)
The hadith instructs that this dua be recited seven times after the Maghrib and Fajr prayers. However, this practice alone should not be considered the sole means of salvation from Hellfire.
Rather, alongside prayer, repentance, fulfilling obligatory and mandatory duties, avoiding sin, performing good deeds and hoping for Allah’s mercy, this dua should also be recited regularly.
