Sylhet Battalion 48 of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized a huge quantity of smuggled Indian goods in separate operations along the Sylhet border, detaining two people in the process. The goods were seized from border areas early Saturday (Sept. 5).
BGB sources said the operation was carried out based on secret information from late Friday night (Sept. 4) into Saturday morning.
The operation, carried out in the border areas of Banglabazar, Lafarge, Sonalichhera, Bichhanakandi, Tamabil, Lobia, Kalairag, Sonarhat and Sangram BOP under Sylhet Battalion 48 BGB’s jurisdiction, recovered a large quantity of Indian cattle and goats, cumin, cosmetics, sunglasses, chocolate, fireworks, fuchka, various fruits, bidi, chips, raisins, juice, mobile phones and yaba. A boat used to smuggle garlic from Bangladesh into India, and also used for illegally extracting sand and stone from the river, was also seized. Two suspects were detained in the operation. The estimated market value of the seized contraband is around 7.87 million taka (78.69 lakh taka).
Confirming the information Saturday, Lt. Col. Md. Nazmul Haque, commanding officer of Sylhet Battalion 48 BGB, said the BGB’s operational activities and intelligence efforts to maintain overall border security and prevent smuggling and drug trafficking remain ongoing. As part of this, operations at various points along the border made it possible to seize this large quantity of contraband and detain the two suspects. He said the necessary next steps regarding the detained suspects and the seized goods, in accordance with law and standing regulations, are underway.
