Local farmers in Jhinaidah’s Shailkupa blocked a highway with tree trunks and staged a protest demanding chemical fertilizer. The demonstration took place Saturday (Sept. 5) morning at Garaganj Bazar in the upazila.
Local farmers said that around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, they went to fertilizer dealer “Messrs Shuvo Enterprise” at Garaganj Old Bazar to collect fertilizer.
At that time, the dealer’s staff refused to provide the fertilizer.
Angered, the farmers immediately blocked the Garaganj-Shailkupa connecting road by placing tree trunks across it.
The roughly hour-long blockade completely halted vehicle movement on the road, causing severe hardship for commuters. Upazila agriculture officials rushed to the scene after being informed and gave a firm assurance of fertilizer supply, after which the farmers lifted the blockade.
Confirming the incident, Shailkupa police station’s officer-in-charge, Humayun Kabir Molla, said that while an unwanted situation had arisen over fertilizer, it was resolved through prompt administrative action. He said once the farmers received the fertilizer, they withdrew the road blockade and traffic returned to normal.
