A father drowned trying to save his son after the boy nearly drowned while fishing in a pond in Saghata upazila, Gaibandha. Moynul Haque, 36, died after his 10-year-old son, Mahin Islam, went underwater while the two were fishing.
The incident occurred Saturday (Sept. 5) afternoon at Teliyan Beel in the upazila’s Bonarpara union. It was confirmed by Bonarpara Union Parishad Chairman Nasirul Alam Swapan and Union Parishad member Ibrahim Ali.
The deceased, Moynul Haque, was the son of the late Mohammad Ali of Chhatkalpani village in Bonarpara union.
Union Parishad member Ibrahim Ali said Moynul and his son Mahin had gone, as they did every day, to fish at Teliyan Beel with a small net. After fishing, while bathing, Moynul’s son Mahin Islam went underwater. When Moynul tried to rescue him, he himself went under and went missing.
On receiving the news, members of Saghata Upazila Fire Service went to the scene and, after 30 minutes of effort, recovered the body of the missing Moynul.
Tofazzal Hossain, in-charge of Saghata Upazila Fire Service, said, “On receiving the news, we conducted an operation at the scene and recovered the body of the missing Moynul.”
