Opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman visited the grave of martyr Abdul Malek and laid the foundation stone for the Martyr Abdul Malek Welfare Foundation Complex in Bogura. He later met and exchanged views with members of martyr Abdul Malek’s family.
Shafiqur Rahman has been in Bogura since Saturday morning as part of a day-long organisational tour.
During the exchange with martyr Abdul Malek’s family members, Dr Shafiqur Rahman expressed his sympathy and remembered the martyr’s sacrifice with deep respect. He expressed firm resolve to continue standing by the martyr’s family.
Also present during the visit were Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Naib-e-Ameer and Bogura region director A T M Azharul Islam MP, central executive council member Principal Shahabuddin, and other central and local leaders.
Student leader martyr Abdul Malek had taken a stand in favour of the Islamic education system in then-Pakistan while at Dhaka University. He was seriously injured in an attack during clashes between two groups at a seminar held at Dhaka University on August 12, 1969, and died on August 15 while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College. To commemorate the day of his killing, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir observes August 15 every year as “Islamic Education Day.”
