Chinese ambassador pays courtesy call on opposition leader

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen paid a courtesy call on opposition leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.

The meeting took place at 11:30am on Tuesday at the opposition leader’s official residence on Minto Road in the capital.

The Chinese embassy’s political section director Zhang Jing and political attaché Ru Qi were also present. The meeting was held in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.

The discussion covered various matters of mutual interest to Bangladesh and China, and both sides highlighted the significance of the two countries’ longstanding historical friendship. They noted that the two nations continue to play an important role in the welfare of their peoples, political, diplomatic and friendly relations, economic development, expansion of mutual trade, and cultural exchange, and expressed hope that the relationship would grow deeper, stronger and more multifaceted in the coming days.

The discussion also covered the Teesta Barrage master plan, the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor, and China’s investments and various proposed projects in Bangladesh in detail. The opposition leader sought China’s cooperation toward an early resolution of the Rohingya issue and the repatriation of the Rohingya population. Also present at the meeting were the opposition leader’s foreign affairs adviser Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, MP, and Ali Ahmad Mabrur, a member of the foreign affairs advisory committee.
