A child named Arisha Khatun, 2, has died after falling into pond water while watching a mobile phone in Gangni, Meherpur.
The incident took place around 1:30pm on Sunday (September 13) in Karamdi village, Tentulbaria union, Gangni upazila. The deceased, Arisha Khatun, was the daughter of Rakibul Islam of the same village.
According to family members and local sources, Arisha was eating lunch at home while watching a mobile phone.
After finishing her meal, she went to play near the house, still watching the phone. At some point, without her family noticing, the child fell into pond water nearby. When they couldn’t find Arisha a short while later, family members began searching for her. She was eventually found floating in the pond beside the house.
She was quickly taken to Gangni Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared her dead.
The child’s aunt, Chumki Khatun, said Arisha had been eating rice while watching her phone. After finishing, she went off to play still holding the phone, and later fell into the pond next to the house.
Mahbubur Rahman Noyon, a doctor at the emergency department of Gangni Upazila Health Complex, said the child had died before reaching the hospital.
