A housewife named Sumi Akter has allegedly been strangled to death in Madaripur over a dowry demand.
Her body was recovered Monday (September 14) morning from her in-laws’ home in North Jhikorhati village, Sadar upazila.
Sumi was the daughter of Chandu Molla of the East Darshana area in Dasar upazila.
Relatives of the deceased allege that Sumi married Akbar Howlader, son of Iran Howlader of North Jhikorhati in Sadar upazila, two and a half years ago. Not long after the marriage, disputes began between the couple over minor issues. Recently, her in-laws pressured her to bring 200,000 taka in dowry. Her family alleges she was frequently beaten after refusing to provide the money. Following this pattern, the housewife was strangled to death during an argument between the couple on Sunday night.
When the matter became known, accused husband Akbar Howlader and others fled. After being informed, police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to the morgue at Madaripur 250-Bed District Hospital for post-mortem examination. Relatives and local residents have demanded justice for the accused over the incident.
Officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad said marks of injury were found on various parts of the body. Police are investigating whether it was murder or suicide, and further legal action will be taken once the post-mortem report is received.
