No three-wheeler vehicles of any kind will be allowed on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway or any other highway in the country, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said. He said an artificial intelligence (AI)-based “auto fine system” has been launched to restore order on the highways. Under this system, speeding, illegal parking, wrong-way driving, and various other traffic violations will be automatically detected.
The home minister made the remarks to reporters Tuesday afternoon, August 18, after inaugurating AI cameras in the Meghnaghat area of Sonargaon on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.
He said any errors or flaws detected in the AI cameras installed on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway would be corrected, after which the system would be rolled out in phases to other highways across the country.
He said any extortion that takes place on highways, whether by vehicle owners or workers, will now be recorded on camera, which will help reduce the tendency toward extortion.
On the subject of three-wheelers, Salahuddin Ahmed said none would be allowed on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway or any other highway in the country under any circumstances. Action will be taken against them if they enter a highway, he said.
Under the newly launched auto fine system, AI cameras will detect vehicles exceeding the speed limit on highways, illegal parking, wrong-way driving, and various other traffic violations. Once a violation is detected, a case notice and fine notification will be sent by SMS to the registered vehicle owner’s mobile phone.
The notice will specify the type of violation and the fine amount. The fine can be paid from home through designated mobile financial services (MFS).
Highway police expect the technology-driven system to make traffic law enforcement faster, more transparent, and more effective, while also restoring order to long-distance vehicle movement on highways and increasing compliance with traffic laws.
Highway police believe the system will also play an important role in reducing road accidents, particularly by helping curb risky behavior such as speeding, reckless driving, and driving the wrong way.
Until now, enforcing traffic law on highways has relied on direct police monitoring and manually filed cases. An AI-based automated monitoring system has now been added to that effort. Officials believe this will increase both enforcement and accountability.
Also present at the inauguration were Home Ministry Senior Secretary Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir, Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation President Shimul Biswas, Narayanganj-3 MP Azharul Islam Mannan, and other relevant officials.
