Hasibur Rahman, boyfriend of model and actress Lina Akter, known professionally as Ridhika Ridhi, has been sent to jail after being arrested in connection with a case filed over her death at a residence in the Bashundhara area of the capital’s Bhatara police station. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam ordered him sent to jail on Sunday.
Bhatara police produced Hasibur Rahman before the court after noon. The case’s investigating officer, Bhatara Police Sub-Inspector Abdul Wadud, requested he be held in custody. Following the hearing, the court ordered him sent to jail.
Sub-Inspector Kamal Hossain of the prosecution department confirmed the matter. He said the accused’s lawyers filed a bail petition, and the court set August 18 for the bail hearing. Hasibur was arrested the previous night.
According to the First Information Report, Lina Akter was found dead at a residence in the Bhatara area on August 15. She had been living there while working in media. Lina had been in a long-term relationship with Hasibur Rahman.
The FIR alleges that Hasibur had subjected her to repeated physical and psychological abuse since the start of their relationship. The night before the incident, on August 14, Lina was at home with two friends. Around 11 p.m., an argument took place between Lina and Hasibur over the phone. Lina then asked her friends to go sleep in the living room.
Around 5:30 a.m., Hasibur went to Lina’s flat and called out to her. When her friends opened the door, Hasibur told them Lina had taken her life in anger at him. Everyone then entered the room and found Lina unresponsive. She was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Lina’s mother, Moni Begum, filed a case at Bhatara police station alleging abetment of suicide.
In the application submitted to the court, the investigating officer stated that Hasibur had repeatedly caused Lina psychological distress over the phone on various matters and had incited her toward suicide. The case alleges that, unable to bear this abuse and incitement, Lina took her own life.
Police say Hasibur admitted to the offense during initial questioning and acknowledged his involvement in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
