The long-awaited gazette notification for government employees’ ninth pay scale is facing a brief delay, sources said, as some administrative and legal procedures are completed before the decision takes effect.
Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani had said the pay structure — approved by the Cabinet on Aug. 31 — would be published by Thursday. However, Finance Secretary Dr. Khairuzzaman Majumder confirmed that the notification will be issued next Sunday, once the necessary administrative steps are finished. It will take formal effect immediately after publication.
Finance ministry sources said the gazette process is already underway. The draft pay scale will be sent to the Bangladesh Government Press and returned to the finance ministry, after which it will require vetting by the law ministry and a formal SRO (Statutory Regulatory Order) number before publication.
Under the new structure, base pay for grade 20 employees rises 142% — from 8,250 taka to 20,000 taka. Base pay for grade 1 employees rises 100%, to 156,000 taka. Although the new scale is deemed effective from July 1 this year, employees will not receive the full increase at once — the government will implement the increased base pay in three phases during the 2026-27 fiscal year.
