Actress Porimoni was held up in traffic on her way to court to face cross-examination in an attempted-rape, attempted-murder and assault case, and so did not reach the court in time on Sunday. Her cross-examination did not take place, and the court set 30 November as the next date.
Speaking to reporters in the court premises afterwards, Porimoni described the hearing dates as “mental torture” for her.
“Only the person it happens to really knows what they go through. When these dates come up I go through a lot of mental trauma, and it makes me recall those events. For me these are a kind of mental torture,” she said.
Seeking a swift conclusion to the case, she said: “Five years have passed. Let the cross-examination finish as soon as possible, let there be a resolution, an exemplary punishment. I pray to Allah that this ends very soon.”
Speaking of the strain, Porimoni added: “This is a lot of hassle for me — giving time to my children, managing everything and then bearing this mental strain of court. I no longer want to take this hassle.”
Porimoni’s lawyer, Nilanjana Rifat Surovi, said Porimoni could not reach the court by noon because of traffic, so the cross-examination did not take place and the next hearing was set for 30 November.
The accused in the case are Nasir Uddin, Tuhin Siddiqui Omi and Shahidul Alam, who are on bail; the allegations are untested. Nasir and Omi appeared in court that day, while Shahidul Alam sought more time.
Porimoni alleged she was harassed at a boat club on the bank of the Turag river in Birulia, Savar, on 8 June 2021. On 14 June that year she filed a case at Savar Model police station alleging attempted rape, attempted murder and assault. The trial is under way in a closed courtroom at Dhaka’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. Porimoni began giving testimony on 29 November 2022, but her testimony has not yet concluded.
