JAMALPUR, Bangladesh — A court sentenced four men to life in prison for kidnapping a married woman, also fining each defendant 50,000 taka (about $420), officials said.

Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 handed down the sentence on Wednesday afternoon.

The convicted men are Mohammad Majnu, son of Munna alias Monnaf, of Bhangguni Danga village in Melandaha upazila; Mohammad Zahurul Islam, son of Iman Ali, of the same village; Hanif Khandakar, son of Hatem Ali Khandakar, of Randhanigacha village; and Mohammad Momin Mia, son of Abul Kashem.

State prosecutor Fazlul Haque said the convicted men were residents of the victim’s father’s neighborhood, and that Majnu had been pressing the woman with romantic proposals for a long time. On Feb. 9, 2022, the defendants abducted her from Rashidpur in Sadar as she was traveling from her husband’s home to her father’s home. She was later rescued from the home of Hanif Khandakar. Two days after the incident, on Feb. 11, the woman’s father filed a kidnapping case at Jamalpur police station, the prosecutor said.

The court delivered the verdict after recording the testimony of four witnesses, with the defendants present. The court ordered that the fine money be paid to the victim.
