Three people have been killed after a bus crashed into another bus standing on the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway in Shibchar, Madaripur. At least 15 people were injured.
The accident happened at about 3:30pm on Friday (September 25) in the Bakhrerkandi area of the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway.
According to the fire service and eyewitnesses, a Palki Paribahan bus left Gopalganj for Dhaka in the afternoon. When it reached the Bakhrerkandi area of Shibchar on the expressway, one of its wheels failed and the bus was parked on the expressway. A speeding Hanif Paribahan bus then hit the Palki Paribahan bus from behind. Three people died on the spot and at least 15 were injured.
Firefighters from Bhanga in Faridpur rescued the injured and took them to a local clinic. Traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane came to a halt after the accident, and Shibchar highway police brought the situation under control at about 5pm.
“Three people died on the spot,” said Abu Zafar Sardar, station officer of the Bhanga fire service in Faridpur. “The Palki Paribahan bus was parked on the expressway when a speeding Hanif Paribahan bus crashed into the broken-down bus in front. One of the injured is in a critical condition.”
Shibchar upazila nirbahi officer HM Ibne Mizan said highway police and the fire service were instructed to carry out rescue work on receiving news of the accident, and work is under way to identify the dead.
