The National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate has fined a pharmacy in Chuadanga 25,000 taka for storing expired blood bags and insulin in its fridge.
The fine was imposed during a monitoring drive carried out in the Hijolgari and Dingedaha areas of the sadar upazila from 11am to 1:30pm on Monday.
According to the directorate, expired blood bags and insulin were found stored in the fridge at Messrs Sumi Pharmacy in Hijolgari Bazar. With the offence established under the relevant section of the Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009, the pharmacy’s owner, Md Ashraful Alam, was fined 25,000 taka, which was collected on the spot.
During the drive, other traders in the market were given strict directions to keep updated price lists, buy and sell goods at fair, fixed prices, and refrain from selling expired or substandard products, medicine, seeds and baby food.
The drive was led by Mohammad Mamunul Hasan, assistant director of the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate’s Chuadanga district office. Md Rafiqul Islam, a member of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), and a district police team assisted during the operation.
Assistant director Mohammad Mamunul Hasan said such drives would continue in the public interest.
