The government has taken steps to ensure necessary healthcare at the local level, reducing the need for rural people to travel to cities for treatment. To this end, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossen has announced a plan to build “health hubs” in the country’s rural areas.

He made the remarks on Sunday morning while visiting the Haimchar Upazila Health Complex in Chandpur.

During the hospital visit, the health minister toured various aspects of the overall healthcare situation and management. Seeing the hospital’s mismanagement, he expressed anger and gave the officials concerned the necessary directions.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the hospital’s management, the health minister ordered the stand-release of Chandpur district civil surgeon Dr Md Nur Alam Din.

During the visit, the health minister alleged that the health sector had not been given proper importance under the previous “fascist government”, leaving the country’s health system in a fragile state. He also alleged that public money had been embezzled during that time by buying medical equipment at inflated prices.

The health minister’s surprise visit exposed various weaknesses in the management of the Haimchar Upazila Health Complex. Questions have also been raised over the quality of service and management at this government health centre.

Chandpur-3 MP Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik and other officials concerned were present.
