The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection conducted a market-monitoring drive for essential goods in the Rajganj Bazar area of Cumilla city. Four businesses were fined a total of 54,000 taka for various irregularities found during the operation.
The operation ran from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 6), monitoring grocery, fish, meat, poultry and vegetable shops, among other businesses in the market.
The Consumer Rights Directorate’s Cumilla office said the operation found various irregularities, including short-weighing, failure to display price lists, failure to keep vouchers, and selling soybean oil above the maximum retail price (MRP).
For these offenses, Messrs Pradip Store was fined 48,000 taka, Ranjit Store 2,000 taka, Suman Poultry 2,000 taka, and Bismillah Meat Shop 2,000 taka. Alongside the total 54,000-taka fine imposed on the four businesses, they were warned against committing such irregularities in the future.
Md. Kawsar Mia, assistant director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, Cumilla, and office assistant Farida Yeasmin were present during the operation.
A team from Cumilla district police provided overall support during the operation.
Assistant Director Md. Kawsar Mia said four businesses were fined a total of 54,000 taka for violating consumer rights. He said the owners of the businesses were also warned against committing such irregularities in the future, and that such operations would continue to protect consumers’ interests and regulate the pricing and sale of essential goods in the market.
