Detective police (DB) in Tangail’s Kalihati upazila have arrested two Bhuapur Jubo Dal leaders after recovering 300 pieces of yaba tablets from them. They were arrested on Tuesday (September 15) afternoon in front of the Brishti Hotel at Elenga bus stand on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway.
Those arrested are Hasan Ali, 37, organising secretary of Ward No. 6 Jubo Dal in Bhuapur upazila’s Gobindashi union and son of Azahar Ali of Chituliapara, and Mahmudul Hasan, 34, a member of Gobindashi union Jubo Dal and son of Abdul Haque of Shaldair village in the same upazila. Police recovered 150 pieces of yaba each from them, totalling 300 pieces.
It is learned that the two men, identifying themselves as “July fighters,” had been using their political influence to run a drug trade in the area for a long time while evading the administration’s watch. They also reportedly used their claimed “July fighter” identity to pressure the administration at various times.
District detective police (DB) sub-inspector Raise Uddin said: “Acting on confidential information, two self-identified July fighters were arrested with yaba from an area near a hotel in Elenga. They were sent to court on Wednesday after the completion of legal formalities.” He further said: “In initial questioning, they said they had brought the yaba tablets from Gabsara and were waiting for a buyer to sell them in Elenga.”
