Meghmallar Bosu, former president of Chhatra Union who has repeatedly drawn public attention for his activities and provocative remarks, has attempted suicide. He was found unconscious Monday night and admitted to Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital.
DMC Hospital Director Brigadier General Asaduzzaman said Bosu lost consciousness after taking an overdose of sleeping medication. He was moved to a cabin after his condition improved with initial treatment, but was later transferred to the ICU after developing breathing difficulties.
It is understood that Bosu attempted suicide amid feelings of despair stemming from political and personal, including family-related, pressures. Before the incident, he had posted a status on Facebook. Colleagues began searching for him after seeing the post.
Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) General Secretary S.M. Farhad confirmed the incident Tuesday morning. He said that after seeing Bosu’s Facebook post, contacts were made in various places to search for him. He was later found unconscious near a gate of Suhrawardy Udyan after searches at likely locations.
In a Facebook post written before the incident, Bosu described feeling overwhelmed by a sense of hopelessness and lost purpose, reflecting on two earlier periods in his life — around early 2020 and again around the time of last year’s DUCSU election — when he said he had felt most fulfilled.
He also wrote that he felt overwhelmed by despair and guilt, particularly toward his mother, and expressed gratitude to several friends and well-wishers who had tried to support him through past difficulties, saying he felt he had let them down.
Bosu also made a personal request that his former partner not be blamed in any way in connection with his condition, writing that she had shown him more care than anyone else in his life, and that after a previous attempt, people had wrongly blamed her, when in fact he felt he himself was responsible for causing her distress.
