China’s President Xi Jinping said the Middle East should not become an arena for great-power rivalry and geopolitical conflict. He also said China was ready to work with Arab countries to establish lasting peace in the region.

During a meeting with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq in Beijing on Monday, Xi said the world was going through profound changes not seen in a century.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement quoted Xi as saying the Gulf region of the Middle East should not become a stage for great-power rivalry and geopolitical conflict. He said all sides needed a joint effort and security cooperation to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Xi also said China was working continuously to end the US and Israeli war against Iran. He said Beijing wanted to contribute wisdom and practical solutions to the Middle East’s security crisis.

Oman’s Sultan Haitham arrived in Beijing on Sunday for a two-day visit. It is the first visit to China by an Omani head of state since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1978.
