A court in Tangail has sentenced two accused to rigorous imprisonment for life in a rape case. They were also fined Tk 3 lakh each, with three more years of rigorous imprisonment if it is not paid.
Judge Dr Abdul Majid of Tangail’s children’s violence prevention tribunal passed the sentence on Wednesday afternoon.
The convicts are Arif, 23, son of Nazrul Islam of Brahmanbari village in Madhupur upazila, Tangail, and Rubel, 23, son of Aynal of the same village.
The tribunal’s public prosecutor, Advocate Khandaker Md Rokunuzzaman, said the complainant had married against her family’s wishes. In the middle of the night of 4 September 2024 she went to meet her husband outside the house. The accused then tied her husband to a post and raped her in turn.
Six days later the victim herself filed a case with Madhupur police station. Police submitted a charge sheet to the court on 14 November that year.
After the trial the court passed the sentence on Wednesday. The judge read out the verdict in the presence of the accused, who were then taken to Tangail jail.
Advocate Haradhan Chandra Singha was the lawyer for the defence.
