Police have recovered the body of a girl named Jannatul Tazmin, 14, from cropland at Jagatpur in Lalmai upazila, Cumilla. An abandoned CNG-run autorickshaw was recovered near the body.

The body was recovered on Thursday from cropland beside the Manumura jungle at Jagatpur Uttarpara in Perul Uttar union.

Tazmin was the daughter of Abdul Alim of the Chhatiantala area of Churamankati union in Jashore Sadar upazila. She was a seventh-grade student at Farida Bidyayatan in Cumilla city.

Local people said they became suspicious on seeing a CNG-run autorickshaw lying abandoned in the Manumura area on the Kanchikata-Harishchar Bazar road. They then went into the cropland about 50 yards from the road and saw a girl’s body beside a ridge between the plots. A gamchha was wound round her neck and her face had been pressed into the earth.

Her father, Abdul Alim, said Tazmin left their rented home in the Racecourse Dhanmondi area of Cumilla city on Sunday, saying she was going to a friend’s house. She later went to Cox’s Bazar with that friend. He spoke to his daughter by phone at about 2am on Thursday after she had arrived from Cox’s Bazar and got down in front of Hotel Nurjahan in the Cumilla Bishwa Road area. Unable to reach her after that, he tried in the morning to trace the location of her mobile phone. Learning that it was in the Lalmai area, he went to look and heard that her body had been found at Jagatpur.

Lalmai police station officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman said the body was unidentified at first and was later identified. He put her age at about 15 and said a gamchha was wound round her neck. The body has been sent to the morgue of Cumilla Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.
