A journalist in Laksam, Cumilla, has filed a general diary (GD) with police, saying he received death threats and was intimidated in other ways.
Golam Mahbub Sobhani filed the GD at Laksam police station on Monday (26 October).
According to the GD, Sobhani is the information and technology secretary of the Laksam Press Club, the Laksam upazila correspondent of the daily Matrichhaya and the Cumilla South correspondent for the digital section of Banglanews24. He also runs a Facebook page and an online news portal, both called Laksam City News.
He says the threats came from a man named Monjurul Haque, over news he had posted on social media. Monjurul Haque is from Nurpur village in Bangadda union of neighbouring Nangalkot upazila.
On 18 October 2026, Sobhani posted on the Laksam City News Facebook page about the harassment of a Laksam College student on 24 September. Over that post, he says, Monjurul Haque first sent him messages from a WhatsApp number and then to the page’s inbox, abusing him in obscene language, threatening to kill him and intimidating him in other ways. He says he now fears for his own and his family’s safety.
In the GD, he says leaders of the Laksam Press Club advised him to seek legal recourse after he discussed the matter with them, and that he filed the GD to avoid any untoward situation and to secure his safety.
“I have all the evidence of Monjurul’s threats, intimidation and indecent behaviour towards me. For now I have filed a general diary at the police station. If necessary, I will file a case with the cyber tribunal,” Sobhani said.
Kazi Kamrunnahar Laily, officer-in-charge of Laksam police station, confirmed the GD and said necessary action would be taken.
The accused could not immediately be reached for comment.
