FARIDPUR — A 10-party alliance held a large election rally in Faridpur on Saturday in support of the scales electoral symbol, drawing crowds in a festive atmosphere across the city.
The rally began around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, from in front of the Faridpur deputy commissioner’s office. Marchers circled the city’s main roads before ending at the Faridpur Model Mosque, carrying party slogans, banners and festoons and calling on the public to vote for the scales.
Speakers at a brief gathering after the march included Professor Abdur Tawab, the alliance’s candidate for the Faridpur-3 seat, along with district Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Md. Badruddin, Naib Amir Md. Abul Bashar, Faridpur district Khelafat Majlis president Maulana Amjad Hossain and leaders of other alliance parties.
Speakers said the people of the country had been effectively denied the right to vote for nearly 17 years. They expressed hope that the upcoming national parliamentary election would be an important opportunity for voters to participate freely and elect candidates of their choice. The 10-party alliance was working in unity to pursue principled, just and people-centered politics, they said.
The alliance’s main aims are restoring democracy, establishing good governance and securing people’s fundamental rights, speakers told the gathering. They urged voters across all sections of society to elect Professor Abdur Tawab by a large margin in the upcoming election.
Supporters and party workers had gathered at the venue from across the city well before the program began. Law-enforcement personnel were also visibly deployed to ensure a peaceful event. After the gathering, a brief march again circled the city, with a large number of party workers and supporters taking part.
