DHAKA — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expelled war veteran and engineer Abdul Halim, an adviser to the Kalihati upazila BNP and vice president of the central committee of the Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal, from all party posts.

A press release signed by BNP senior joint secretary general advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday, Jan. 26, announced the expulsion of Abdul Halim from the party.

The press release said Abdul Halim, an adviser to the Kalihati upazila BNP in Tangail district, had been expelled from his primary membership and all positions in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party for defying the party’s decision and contesting the upcoming 13th parliamentary election as an independent candidate. He was also expelled from his post as vice president of the central committee of the Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal and from all party positions.

Abdul Halim had sought BNP nomination from the Tangail-4 constituency, which comprises Kalihati upazila, for the 13th parliamentary election. However, the BNP high command nominated Lutfor Rahman Matin, a member of the BNP central executive committee, from this seat. Defying the party decision, Halim has been contesting as an independent candidate with the motorcycle symbol and has been campaigning regularly across the constituency. The party’s rebel candidacy has divided leaders and activists.
