TANGAIL — Allegations of murder have surfaced after an elderly couple was found dead at their home in Basail upazila of Tangail on Tuesday, police said. Police recovered both bodies from their house around noon on Jan. 27.
The deceased were identified as Thandu Mia, 75, and his wife Rizia Begum, 70, of Gosakhali village in Basail. Relatives said several day laborers had been brought in two days earlier to work on Boro paddy cultivation. The laborers had been staying in a room next to the couple’s house. On Monday night, the couple’s grandson Shakil Sikder became suspicious after noticing unusual movements by the laborers. The next morning, he saw the door of the house open and went inside, where he found Thandu Mia and Rizia Begum lying on the floor. The almirah and furniture in the room were in disarray. With help from local residents, they were taken to Mirzapur Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared both dead. Alamgir Kabir, officer-in-charge of Basail police station, said workers from northern Bangladesh had come to the couple’s house on Monday night. When Thandu felt stomach pain at night, the workers gave him medicine they had been carrying. The next morning, when they did not wake up, local people called out and eventually found them lying inside the house. The furniture was in disarray. Residents took them to the hospital, where the on-duty physician declared them dead. The bodies were at Tangail General Hospital. Preparations for filing a case were underway, he said.
