NAKLA, Bangladesh — A 12-year-old madrasa student was killed on the spot and four others, including three members of one family, were injured when a passenger bus rammed a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Sherpur highway during the Eid holiday, police said.
The crash occurred Monday afternoon at the Kursha bypass intersection in Nakla on the highway, police said.
The boy, identified as Nazif, was the son of police constable Nazrul Islam of the Masterbari area in Jamalpur Sadar upazila. Those injured included Nazif’s mother, Sumi Akter, 37; his brother Nahid, 8; his sister Naoshin, 15; and the auto-rickshaw driver, 48.
According to police and local sources, Nazrul Islam is a police constable posted at Tarakanda police station in Mymensingh. His wife and children were traveling by CNG auto-rickshaw from Mymensingh to their family home in Jamalpur for Eid.
Around 11:45 a.m., a Dhaka-bound passenger bus speeding recklessly tried to overtake another bus at the Kursha bypass intersection in Nakla upazila and struck the auto-rickshaw, police said. Nazif died at the scene. His mother, two siblings and the auto-rickshaw driver were seriously injured.
Sumi Akter and Nahid were in critical condition and were taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. The other two were admitted to the Nakla upazila health complex.
Nakla police officer in charge Ripon Chandra Gope confirmed the crash. He said the bus involved had been seized and the injured were given prompt medical treatment. Further legal action is underway, he said.
