Bangladesh records 423 road deaths in October, BRTA says

DHAKA — Road fatalities in Bangladesh continue to mount, with 423 people killed and 589 others injured in 452 accidents nationwide in October, according to a report by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

The report, recently signed by BRTA Chairman Abu Mamtaz Saad Uddin Ahmed, said the statistics were compiled through the agency’s regional offices across the country.

By division, the Dhaka division reported 115 accidents that killed 109 people and injured 163. Chattogram division had 98 accidents with 89 deaths and 188 injuries. Rajshahi division reported 54 accidents, 54 deaths and 44 injuries. Khulna division saw 59 accidents, 54 deaths and 30 injuries. Barishal division had 29 accidents, 21 deaths and 59 injuries. Sylhet division reported 23 accidents, 22 deaths and 41 injuries. Rangpur division had 51 accidents, 48 deaths and 45 injuries. Mymensingh division reported 23 accidents, 26 deaths and 19 injuries.

A total of 695 vehicles were involved in the October crashes, including 15 cars or jeeps, 114 buses or minibuses, 124 trucks or covered vans, 31 pickups, 23 microbuses, 164 motorcycles, 22 vans, 5 tractors, 27 easy-bikes, 11 battery-powered rickshaws, 41 auto-rickshaws and 118 other vehicles.

Of the 423 people killed, 2 died in car or jeep crashes, 64 in bus or minibus crashes, 48 in truck or covered-van crashes, 11 in pickup crashes, 8 in microbus crashes, 130 in motorcycle crashes, 21 in van crashes, 1 in a tractor crash, 17 in easy-bike crashes, 11 in battery-rickshaw crashes, 32 in auto-rickshaw crashes and 96 in other vehicle crashes, the report said.
