GAIBANDHA — The body of a 30-year-old woman, Babita Khatun, was recovered with her throat cut from a rented home in Gaibandha’s Palashbari upazila, and police have arrested her husband, Harun Mia, in connection with the killing.
Police arrested Harun while he was being treated at Rangpur Medical College Hospital around 4 a.m. Sunday, March 29. He had been on the run since the killing. Palashbari police station officer-in-charge Sarwar Alam Khan confirmed the arrest.
Babita Begum’s body was recovered with her throat cut around 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, from a rented home in the Amalagachi area of Dholbhanga in Palashbari upazila. Police also found a severed penis at the scene.
Police said the severed organ belonged to Babita’s husband, Harun Mia. According to multiple reliable sources, Babita cut off her husband’s penis during a marital argument. Harun then killed his wife and fled while wounded. Police arrested him while he was being treated at Rangpur Medical College in the early hours of Sunday.
Babita Begum’s mother, Hasna Begum, filed a murder case at Palashbari police station on Sunday, naming Harun as the prime accused, along with three named and three to four unidentified people.
Palashbari officer-in-charge Sarwar Alam Khan said the fugitive husband, Harun Mia, had been arrested from Rangpur Medical College Hospital in the throat-cutting murder. Harun had been undergoing treatment at the hospital, he said, and the severed organ found in the room where the killing took place was Harun’s.
The officer-in-charge said Harun was out of danger but was receiving blood transfusions for anemia. He was not speaking at all, the officer said, and once he recovered he would be sent to jail through the court.
The investigation into those involved in the killing and the circumstances of the crime is continuing, he said, and police are trying to arrest the other accused.
