A case has been filed over the beating to death of a university student, Md Azmul Hossain, in Khulna on an accusation of theft. Azmul’s father, Md Kutub Uddin, filed the murder case at Harintana police station in Khulna on Saturday night.

The case names four university students along with 20 to 25 unnamed people as accused, according to Harintana police officer-in-charge Md Iqbal Hossain. Police have not yet been able to arrest anyone involved in the killing.

The officer-in-charge said the student’s body was handed to his family on Saturday night after a post-mortem examination at Khulna Medical College Hospital. Police are investigating.

Azmul Hossain was the son of Kutub Uddin of Boro Shalua village in Darshana, Chuadanga. He was a first-year student in the English department of North Western University in Khulna.

Azmul lived in a mess on the mosque lane of Islamnagar road, behind the Khan Jahan Ali residential hall (Khaja Hall) of Khulna University. He was beaten on Friday night on an accusation of theft. Students nearby said he fell from the spot at one point. He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in a critical condition and died while undergoing treatment.

A woman in a house beside the mess said she had heard from students that Azmul ate another student’s meal on Friday night. Several students and outsiders then took Azmul up to the roof and beat him over eating the rice he was accused of taking. She heard shouting at about 1am, and then the sound of something falling from the roof.

Azmul’s father, Kutub Uddin, told reporters at the hospital on Saturday that at about 1am on Friday night several young men called him and said: “Your son has stolen our things, you have to give one lakh taka right now.” He then came to Khulna and went first to the mess. From there he went to the hospital and saw his son’s body.

Saying that the reasons behind Azmul’s killing were being examined, officer-in-charge Iqbal Hossain said that however many people were involved in the killing, they would be brought within the law. Between 60 and 70 students lived in the building where Azmul had his mess. He had internal disputes with many of them and there was a good deal of anger towards him. There are allegations against him of stealing shirts, vests and other items belonging to various people at different times. All of it is being investigated.
