GAIBANDHA — The Sundarganj upazila administration in Gaibandha has recovered about four tonnes of Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) rice that had been illegally stockpiled at a home, and has formed a three-member inquiry committee, officials said.
Sundarganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Iffat Jahan Tuli confirmed the recovery, which took place Monday night. The inquiry committee was formed at noon the same day.
According to the administration and local sources, the upazila administration raided the home of Md. Abdul Majid Mia in Kishamat Haldia village in Dhopadanga union on Sunday night based on a tip. The team seized 72 sacks of illegally stockpiled VGF rice from a room in the house. The recovered rice was placed in the custody of reserved-seat local councilor Bilkis Begum.
The upazila administration has formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident, headed by Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Mashiur Rahman. The other members are Upazila Food Controller Swapan Kumar De and Upazila Rural Development Officer Md. Ashraful Alam. The committee has been directed to submit a full report within seven working days.
Project Implementation Officer Md. Mashiur Rahman, who heads the inquiry committee, did not answer repeated calls to his phone for comment.
UNO Iffat Jahan Tuli said the three-member committee had been formed to identify the source of the recovered rice and those involved. “Appropriate action will be taken against those involved once the inquiry report is received,” she said.
