GAIBANDHA — A joint security operation in Gaibandha’s Fulchhari upazila has detained a local BNP leader and seized a cache of locally made weapons from his home, police said. The raid was carried out late Thursday night, Jan. 29, in Rasulpur village in the Balashighat area of Fulchhari upazila.

The detained man is Milon Mia, 44, vice-president of the Kanchipara union BNP. He is the son of the late Mesher Uddin Sarkar of South Rasulpur village in Kanchipara union.

Police said members of the joint forces raided Milon Mia’s home Thursday night based on a tip. They detained him and recovered four ram-das, one Chinese hatchet and one large knife from his possession. The recovered weapons were seized.

Such operations have been intensified ahead of the 13th national parliament election to prevent possible violence, intimidation and sabotage. Joint forces are regularly conducting searches and raids in election areas to maintain peace, police said.

Wahidul Islam Joy, general secretary of the Fulchhari upazila BNP, said the detained Milon Mia is vice-president of the Kanchipara union BNP. “We will take a party-level decision against him,” he said.

Fulchhari police station officer-in-charge Durul Huda said the locally made weapons recovered in the joint operation had already been seized. A case will be filed against the detainee under the arms act, he said, and after completing the necessary legal procedures he will be sent to jail through the court.
