Ishayat Shahriar Apratim, 13, the only child of a teacher at Cumilla University, was called to a lonely wooded hillside and beaten to death with blows to the head from a bamboo stick, in order to take his iPhone.
Police have arrested four people over the killing, including the alleged main planner, Saiful Islam Tuhin. The iPhone used by Apratim has been recovered.
The superintendent of police for Cumilla, Anisuzzaman, gave details of the case and of the arrests at a press conference on Sunday afternoon (September 20).
Police said the killers remained entirely unconcerned after committing the crime. At about 8am on Saturday, Tuhin, Anas, Fahim and others went to Apratim’s home and met his mother, Dr Nahida Begum, to console her. Tuhin returned from there and spent his time at home as normal. Chhatra Dal leaders and ordinary students at the university later reviewed CCTV footage and detained Tuhin the same afternoon. After questioning him, law enforcement used technological assistance to arrest the other accused in Dhaka and Cumilla. Police recovered the iPhone used by Apratim from a place Tuhin pointed out.
Those arrested are Saiful Islam Tuhin, 19, a resident of the Sananda area of ward 24 of Cumilla city; a 15-year-old ninth-grade pupil of Moynamoti Technical School and College, whom BD Global Times is not naming because he is a child; Md Kamrul Hasan of the Hatigara area of Kotwali police station; and Md Siam, 19, a twelfth-grade student at Afzal Khan Degree College.
Ishayat Shahriar Apratim was the only child of Dr Nahida Begum, associate professor in the Bengali department at Cumilla University, and the businessman K M Firoz Shahriar. Apratim was a seventh-grade pupil at a local school.
The superintendent of police for Cumilla, Anisuzzaman, said an investigation began on the basis of a general diary, and that four people had been arrested through CCTV footage and continuous questioning by the detective branch. It has been established at a preliminary stage that Apratim was killed in order to rob him. A charge sheet against the accused will be submitted to court quickly.
